Your IP Camera Could Be the Backdoor Into Your Corporate Network

"Because such cameras often come with poor security features, some threat actors target these devices to gain initial access to a network and from there go on to target internal devices".

The threat isn't theoretical. Last month, cybersecurity firm Hunt.io uncovered Operation CameraSwarm, a coordinated campaign that compromised over 14,000 Dahua cameras across Ukraine and Russia between June 17 and July 22, 2026. The attackers exploited authentication bypass vulnerabilities originally disclosed in 2021, flaws that had been known for five years. They didn't just access the feeds. They installed persistent backdoors on nearly 2,000 devices, turning them into long-term footholds for espionage and data theft.


Why Attackers Love IP Cameras

For a number of reasons, threat actors choose to attack IP cameras. They operate constantly, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and are immediately linked to the internet. The majority use out-of-date software or have inadequate security. Crucially, many continue to function even if security upgrades are stopped. Consequently, IP cameras continue to operate in spite of known, exploitable vulnerabilities.

  • Disable superfluous features, such as FTP, UPnP, remote administration, and internet access.
  • When multi-factor authentication (MFA) is available, turn it on.
  • Segment your network: To keep cameras apart from important systems, place them on a different network or VLAN, like a guest Wi-Fi network.
  • Upscale monitoring: Improve detection skills to spot questionable activities and react quickly to incursions.

"Patching appliances or software to the newest version may protect against future exploitation, but it doesn't remediate historic compromise" is a crucial warning that the CCB included in its conclusion. Patching won't get rid of a backdoor that has already been installed if a camera has already been compromised.
